Overview
Vera Szekely was a Hungarian-born artist and former Olympic swimmer who became an important voice in post-war French art. Trained first as a graphic designer, she experimented with materials such as clay, metal, and wood before discovering her most distinctive artistic language through textiles. Her installations, often made from bent felt, canvas, and “braced sails,” combined structural precision with poetic lightness. From 1948 to 1957, she was also a core member of the ceramic collective Székely-Borderie, known for its singular, handcrafted ceramic works.
