This armoire is a rare example of early high-mountain furniture from the Alps. It was made in one of only two villages, La Meije or La Grave, near the Col du Lautaret, where this type of armoire was produced exclusively.
Crafted from high-quality larch, the piece dates to the 16th century and belongs to the earliest known corpus of furniture made in these alpine regions. Such armoires were produced in very small numbers, in isolated mountain communities, and few examples have survived to the present day.
The armoire retains its original patina and material integrity, carrying the quiet authority of a piece shaped by centuries of use and exceptional scarcity.
