Alabaster Depiction of the Madonna Addolorata, 16th century
Trapani
This small devotional piece depicts the Maria Madre di Pietà dei Massari, a local representation of the Madonna Addolorata associated with Trapani. The image portrays the Virgin Mary in profound sorrow during the Passion and Death of Jesus, and the painting is traditionally carried in the Tuesday procession of Trapani’s renowned Holy Week celebrations. She is venerated as the patroness of sailors and workers.
Because of its small scale, this object was likely intended as a portable devotional image for sailors to carry with them at sea, offering protection and comfort during voyages.
Trapani became especially famous for its alabaster sculptures and devotional carvings of the Madonna, many inspired by the celebrated Madonna of Trapani, one of Sicily’s most important Marian images.
