A remarkable and exceptionally well-preserved Spanish frame of substantial scale, retaining its original carved decoration and historic painted surface. Measuring 155 x 145 cm, the frame displays the bold sculptural character that distinguishes the finest Spanish woodworking of the 17th century. Confident and rhythmic in its design, it combines the beautiful contrast of soft blue paintwork with striking gilt ornament.

The surviving blue surface is particularly noteworthy. Blue-painted frames were popular across Spain during the Baroque period and often used to surround devotional paintings. The pigment may be smalt, a cobalt-based glass pigment that was widely used during the period and is known to fade over time. Here, this ageing process has left the frame with a beautiful pale blue-grey tone, giving the surface a depth and subtlety that can only be achieved through centuries of natural wear.

Examples of this scale and quality rarely survive in such original condition, making this a fine and evocative example of 17th-century Spanish craftsmanship.
