Designed by Pierre Jeanneret as part of the pioneering furnishing programme for the new city of Chandigarh, the Low Iron Triangle Stool is among the most strikingly utilitarian objects produced for the project. Conceived for institutional use within Panjab University, its pared-back construction reflects the functional ideals that defined Chandigarh’s modernist vision.

A circular solid teak seat rests upon a welded iron tripod frame, strengthened by the distinctive triangular stretcher that lends the design its collector’s name. In contrast to Jeanneret’s celebrated compass-leg desks and chairs, the stool embraces an almost industrial aesthetic, where economy of material, structural clarity and durability take precedence over ornament. The combination of warm teak with blackened iron exemplifies the pragmatic elegance that characterises the finest Chandigarh furniture.

Originally intended as robust workshop and studio seating, surviving examples bear the rich patina acquired through decades of institutional use. Today, the Low Iron Triangle Stool is appreciated not only as a sculptural object but also as an expression of post-war modernism, embodying the collaborative vision of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and the team responsible for one of the twentieth century’s most ambitious architectural projects.
