An original 'Rio' chaise designed by Oscar Niemeyer with his daughter, Ana Maria, in 1978 and manufactured by Tendo Brasileira between 1979 and 1982. Fewer than 50 examples were produced in the first edition, including this example which features the original manufacturer's sticker from Tendo Brasileira.
This example presents itself as a rare excursion into furniture design by one of the twentieth century's most celebrated architects. The Rio chaise distils Niemeyer's lifelong fascination with the curve into a single, sweeping gesture. Its flowing laminated frame possesses the same sense of rhythm and lightness found throughout his architectural work, transforming a functional object into a sculptural statement.
The Rio chaise is considered as one of Niemeyer´s masterpieces for its sculptural and fluid form.
