Designed by Viljo Hirvonen and produced by Valaistustyö in Finland during the 1950s, the H801 floor lamp is a refined example of Scandinavian modern lighting, combining elegant materials with exceptional functionality. The harmonious interplay of leather, painted metal, and brass gives the lamp a distinctive character, while its clean lines and balanced proportions reflect the restrained sophistication of Finnish design.

Highly versatile in use, the lamp features an adjustable height, pivoting shade, and directional light source, allowing it to be tailored to a variety of settings and lighting needs. The thoughtful engineering of the design is matched by the quality of its construction, resulting in a piece that is both practical and visually compelling. This example retains its original finish and displays a rich, attractive patina acquired through decades of careful use. The lamp bears the original Valaistustyö H801 manufacturer’s stamp.

Viljo Hirvonen (1916–1975) was the founder of Valaistustyö Oy, one of Finland’s most important lighting manufacturers. The company is particularly renowned for producing the lighting designs of Alvar Aalto until the 1970s, often working in close collaboration with designers and engineers to achieve technically sophisticated results. Alongside leading Finnish manufacturers such as Taito Oy, Valaistustyö played a pivotal role in establishing the international reputation of Finnish lighting design through its commitment to innovation, craftsmanship, and enduring quality
