A very rare 1780 Cardiganshire potboard dresser, distinguished by its complete absence of handles - a feature specific to this region of West Wales, particularly associated with the Shaker community, which later spread to North America.
Known for their frugal and purely utilitarian approach, this community produced quietly idiosyncratic furniture. This piece sits firmly within a local tradition of which very few examples survive, making it a true piece of history.
Originating from Cilcennin in the Aeron Valley, the dresser carries a strong sense of place. Comparable examples are documented in the seminal two-volume study Welsh Furniture, where similar handle-less forms appear as part of the Cardiganshire vernacular.
An exceptionally scarce survival, this piece stands as a refined expression of rural Welsh craftsmanship and, on a broader scale, an early example to the Shaker style.
