An important early Seventeenth century black and gilded frame in the Herrera style. This example is of imposing architectural form, reflecting the highly intellectual and ordered vocabulary associated with the Spanish architect Juan de Herrera (b. 1530 - d. 1597) whose work helped defined the visual legacy of the reign of King Felipe II of Spain (b. 1527 - d. 1598) and heavily influenced early 17th century aesthetics. Herrera's style, often referred to as Herrarian or Escurialense due to its close association with El Escurial, King Philip II's palace designed by Herrera (with Juan Bautista de Toledo), is distinguished by its more restrained ornament, geometric qualities and fantastic proportions.

This frame exemplifies this vocabulary and the features of other Herrera period and style frames, including a cassette structure, paired gallons, carved diamonds and ovals, early polychrome and a fantastic contrast between giltwood and dark ebonised wood. This frame's architectural intensity and refined ornamentation place it nicely within the Herrera tradition, making it a compelling example of early 17th century and Baroque tastes.
