Loosely based on a hoop backed Windsor chair, this example designed by Barry Parker of the architecture firm Parker & Unwin, was most likely part of the original furnishings for the duo's Hilltop House in Caterham, Surrey, UK. The project was carried out in 1909 and featured a unique interior mixing English Arts & Crafts with Japanese style furnishings.

This chair has an exaggerated arched high back with tapered splats, drop-in rush seats, supported by 'X-frame' stretchers and tapered carved, square legs.

Although designed by Parker, the chair was made by John Paris White of the Pyghtle works in Bedfordshire, UK. The firm was established by White in 1896 and he worked with several important Arts & Crafts designers, including M.H Baillie Scott and C.F.A Voysey amongst others. They notably exhibited at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition Society in both 1900 and 1903.

It is worth noting that the original base in Barry's drawn design differs slightly from the final base of the chair. This would have been changed at the time of manufacture for a more suitable solution, and would have been a change perhaps prompted by White but ultimately designed and controlled by Barry. The final design is more considered and complex than the original drawing.

This chair is one of eight, with examples in the collections of both Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and National Museums Sweden.
